How many calories are in a corn dog?

One regular corn dog on a stick weighs 88 g and carries 220 calories. Per 100 g the fried batter and the frank together run 250 calories. The stick adds nothing. The cornmeal coating adds most of the 23.7 g of carbohydrate, and it carries the 588 mg of sodium that ends up mattering more than the calorie line.

You'd need to walk about 44 minutes to burn the 220 calories in one regular corn dog (88 g).

Corn dog quick facts

The number on this page comes from the USDA survey record FNDDS 2707044, "Corn dog", which describes the finished item: a frank dipped in cornmeal batter, deep-fried, and served on a stick. That is what you are holding at a fair, at a ballpark, or on a sheet pan out of the oven, so it is the row the whole page is built on.

There is a second USDA entry, SR Legacy 173345, "Corn dogs, frozen, prepared", and its per-100-g profile is identical down to the decimal. The only thing that differs is the serving the USDA attaches to it, 78 g instead of 88 g. Same food, smaller stick.

Two rows you will see on a frozen box are missing here on purpose. USDA does not publish added sugars or trans fat for this FNDDS record, so rather than borrow those figures from a package label, we leave them out. The 6.6 g of total sugars in one corn dog is mostly the sweetened batter, and total sugars have no Daily Value, which is why that cell is a dash rather than a percentage.

US servings from one mini to a jumbo

ServingWeightCalories

1 regular corn dog88 g220 kcal
1 bun-length / jumbo corn dog113 g283 kcal
2 regular corn dogs176 g440 kcal
Per 100 g100 g250 kcal

The 88 g regular, the 113 g jumbo and the 19 g cocktail size are USDA household measures for this record. The 1 oz line and the two-corn-dog line are our own arithmetic from the USDA 100 g figure, not USDA servings, because nobody eats a corn dog by the ounce and plenty of people eat two.

The practical range is wider than most people assume. Swap one regular for one bun-length jumbo and you have added 63 calories without changing anything about how the meal looks. Eat three cocktail minis as a snack and you are at 144 calories, our own arithmetic from the 19 g USDA mini, less than a single regular.

Corn dog sizes and the frozen box

Veggie mini corn dogs (MorningStar)211 kcal4 pieces, 76 g160 kcal
Turkey mini corn dogs (State Fair)272 kcal2.68 oz, 75 g204 kcal

Four of those lines share the same 250 kcal per 100 g because they are the same food at different sizes. Only the two meat-alternative rows move the density: the veggie minis are the lightest per gram in the table at 211, the turkey minis the heaviest at 272.

Brand boxes tell a different story than the word "mini" suggests. Foster Farms lists 190 calories for one 75 g corn dog in its Chili Cheese and Honey Crunchy lines, both 253 per 100 g. State Fair Mini Corn Dogs run 317 per 100 g, so a serving of four minis (82 g) is 260 calories, more than a full-size Foster Farms dog. State Fair's Classic Mini in the honey batter is 287 per 100 g for 270 calories in five pieces; the plain Classic Mini is 245 per 100 g and 230 calories in five. Foster Farms' Honey Crunchy Mini lands at 289 per 100 g, or 220 calories for four.

That is the trap. Minis are counted in handfuls, and a handful of them is heavier than the one big stick you were trying to avoid.

Sodium is the row to watch

One regular corn dog delivers 588 mg of sodium, or 26% of the FDA Daily Value of 2,300 mg. That is roughly a quarter teaspoon of table salt in an item you finish in six bites. Fat, by comparison, is the quieter number: 10.6 g is 14% of the Daily Value, and the 3.1 g of saturated fat is 15%.

Eat two and the picture shifts fast. Two regular corn dogs are 1,176 mg of sodium, 51% of the day, against 27% of the day's fat. Add fries and a soda and the sodium is the line you blow through first, not the calories. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans put the same 2,300 mg limit at the center of their sodium advice, and a corn dog is an efficient way to spend it.

The good news is the protein: 7.5 g in one corn dog, 15% of the Daily Value, which is more than most fried fair food returns for the calories. If you are building a plate around one, the missing pieces are vegetables and fiber. One corn dog gives you 0.9 g of fiber, 3% of the day, so a side of raw vegetables or fruit is the cheapest fix, and it lines up with how MyPlate suggests filling the rest of the plate.

How does a corn dog compare?

FoodPer 100 gProtein per 100 gFat per 100 g
Corn dog250 kcal8.57 g12.02 g
Hot dog sandwich, vegetarian, on bun251 kcal15.76 g9.89 g
Hot dog sandwich, turkey, on white bun248 kcal11.14 g11.39 g
Hot dog sandwich, reduced fat, on white bun244 kcal11.99 g10.47 g

This table is per 100 g only. The USDA does not publish a gram weight for the "1 sandwich" serving on those three bun records in this release, so there is no honest per-serving column to put next to them.

Our take: on calories per gram, all four are the same food. The spread is 244 to 251 per 100 g, close enough that choosing a bunned hot dog over a corn dog to save calories is wasted effort. Where they separate is protein: every bun version returns more protein per 100 g than the corn dog does, the vegetarian one nearly double. If you want the fair food, eat the corn dog and keep it to one. If you are picking on nutrition, the bunned versions win on protein while the calories stay flat.

Corn dog FAQs

How many calories are in one corn dog?

220 calories in one regular corn dog of 88 g, based on the USDA figure of 250 calories per 100 g. It also carries 7.5 g of protein, 23.7 g of carbohydrate and 10.6 g of fat. Batter thickness is what moves the number most between one stand and the next.

How many calories in a mini corn dog?

48 calories for one cocktail-size mini of 19 g. Brand boxes come out higher because their batter is denser: State Fair Mini Corn Dogs are 317 calories per 100 g, so a listed serving of four minis at 82 g is 260 calories, more than one full-size corn dog.

How many calories in a jumbo or bun-length corn dog?

283 calories for a 113 g bun-length jumbo, using the same USDA density of 250 calories per 100 g. That is 63 calories more than the 88 g regular for something that looks nearly identical on the stick. Sodium scales with it, to roughly 755 mg per jumbo.

How many calories in a frozen corn dog?

195 calories for one prepared frozen corn dog at the USDA serving weight of 78 g. The nutrition per 100 g is identical to the fair version at 250 calories; the frozen stick is simply smaller. Heating method does not change the calories, whether you use an oven or an air fryer.

How much protein is in a corn dog?

7.5 g of protein in one 88 g corn dog, which is 15% of the Daily Value and 8.57 g per 100 g. That is a decent return for fried food, though a bunned turkey or vegetarian hot dog delivers more protein per 100 g at essentially the same calorie density.

How much sodium is in a corn dog?

588 mg of sodium in one 88 g corn dog, 26% of the FDA Daily Value of 2,300 mg, or about a quarter teaspoon of table salt. Two corn dogs reach 1,176 mg, more than half the day. If you are watching sodium, this is the row that matters, not the fat.

How many calories in 2 corn dogs?

440 calories for two regular 88 g corn dogs, our own arithmetic from the USDA 100 g figure. That pair also brings 21.2 g of fat and 1,176 mg of sodium. Two jumbos would be 566 calories instead, so the size you grab matters as much as the count.

Are corn dogs healthy?

One corn dog is 220 calories with 7.5 g of protein, 588 mg of sodium and only 0.9 g of fiber. It fits a normal day easily; the sodium at 26% of the Daily Value is the part to plan around. Pair it with vegetables or fruit rather than fries and soda.
