Size moves a burrito from 241 to 723 calories

Burritos don't come in one standard size, so the wrapper matters as much as the filling. A miniature burrito (110 g) is 241 calories. A regular (220 g) is 482. A large (330 g) is 723. Against the daily value, that works out to 12, 24 and 36 percent of a day's calories, so the jump from regular to large adds about half again.

Doubling up is where totals climb fast. Two regular burritos come to 964 calories and 2,138 mg of sodium. Three reach 1,445 calories, and five, the kind of count you'd see when feeding a group, add up to 2,409 calories and 5,346 mg of sodium. Those multiples are useful for family meals or batch prep, less so for one sitting.

The simplest lever is choosing the size before you're hungry. A miniature still gives you 12.2 g of protein, about a quarter of the daily value, for half the calories of a regular. If a regular is your usual, a large is a different meal, not a slightly bigger one.

Carbs lead, but fat supplies over a third

Of the calories in a burrito, 44 percent come from carbohydrates, 35 percent from fat and 21 percent from protein. Per 100 g that is 23.9 g of carbs, 8.5 g of fat and 11.1 g of protein. The tortilla and rice drive the carbs; cheese, sour cream and meat drive the fat.

Protein is the better news. A regular burrito delivers 24.5 g, which is 49 percent of the daily value, and a large one reaches 36.7 g, or 73 percent. That makes a burrito a more filling meal than its calorie count alone suggests, especially next to snack foods with similar energy and little protein.

Fat deserves a second look. A regular burrito has 18.8 g of fat, and saturated fat is 3.5 g per 100 g, close to half of the total fat. Fiber is decent at 5.5 g per regular burrito, mostly from beans if they're in the filling. Sugar barely registers at 3.7 g, so this is not a sweet food in disguise.

Sodium is the row to watch

At 486 mg per 100 g, a burrito already carries 21 percent of the sodium daily value in a modest portion. Scale that to a regular burrito and you hit 1,069 mg, or 46 percent. A large one reaches 1,604 mg, 70 percent of the day in a single item, before chips, salsa or a drink.

Sodium stacks up from every layer: seasoned meat, cheese, the tortilla, salsa and canned beans all contribute. Two regular burritos at 2,138 mg leave almost no room for anything salty the rest of the day. That's the scenario to avoid if you track sodium closely.

The miniature is the clear compromise at 535 mg, 23 percent of the daily value. If you watch sodium, picking the smaller size does more than swapping the filling, since the gaps between fillings are small next to the gaps between sizes. Cholesterol, by contrast, stays low at 22 mg per 100 g, and potassium adds 212 mg per 100 g.

A regular burrito works as a full meal

At 482 calories with 24.5 g of protein and 5.5 g of fiber, a regular burrito covers what most people want from lunch or dinner without anything on the side. The trouble usually starts with the extras. Chips, queso and a soda can match or beat the burrito itself.

Better partners are low in calories and sodium: a side salad without heavy dressing, raw vegetables, fruit, or a burrito bowl that skips the tortilla when you want the same flavors lighter. Water or unsweetened drinks keep the meal at the burrito's own number. If the rest of the day runs salty, plan lighter, fresher meals around it.

Packaged options such as Cedarlane Burrito, Beans, Rice & Cheese Style or Don Miguel Breakfast Burrito, Bacon vary with recipe and size, so check the brand table above. For a homemade or restaurant burrito, BodyPal can log it from a photo, which helps when the size doesn't match any label.
