How many calories are in a shot of Crown Royal?

A 1.5 fl oz shot of Crown Royal is 97 calories, and per 100 g the whiskey runs 231 calories. Nothing else on the label moves: no carbs, no sugar, no fat, no protein. The pour size and the proof set the number, and the mixer you add on top usually beats both.

You'd need to walk about 19 minutes to burn the 97 calories in one 1.5 fl oz shot (42 g).

Crown Royal quick facts

Crown Royal Deluxe is bottled at 40% alcohol by volume, which is 80 proof. That is exactly what the USDA record FNDDS 2710700, "Whiskey" describes, and it is the only whiskey entry that carries American household pours — a shot, a jigger, a drink — instead of grams alone. That is the row used everywhere on this page.

There is a second 80-proof entry, SR Legacy 174815, a pooled record for gin, rum, vodka and whiskey. It lands on the same 231 calories per 100 g but lists no serving sizes, so it adds nothing here. The two do not disagree; they are the same spirit strength described twice.

Verified nutrition data

Numbers on this page come from USDA FoodData Central, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food composition database, and from manufacturer labels where a branded product is named. Last verified September 2026. How we verify our data →

Two rows you would expect on a Nutrition Facts panel are missing: added sugars and trans fat. USDA does not publish either for this record, and a distilled spirit has no carbohydrate and no fat for them to come from, so leaving them out costs you nothing. Cholesterol is 0 mg and potassium is 2 mg per 100 g, which works out to 1 mg in a shot.

One more thing worth knowing: US liquor is labeled under TTB rules, not FDA Nutrition Facts rules. That is why you will never find a Crown Royal bottle in the USDA Branded database, and why a generic 80-proof whiskey record is the honest way to count it.

The fluid ounce, the shot, the jigger and the drink all come straight from USDA's own household measures for this record. Only the ounce by weight is ours, scaled from the USDA 100 g figure rather than taken from a USDA serving — and at this density it rounds to the same 65 calories as a fluid ounce anyway.

The line that surprises people is the last USDA pour. What the database calls "1 drink" is 63 g, or about 2.25 fl oz, which is half again more than a standard shot. That is closer to what a heavy-handed home pour looks like than to what a bartender measures. The two fingers in the photo above sit between them: roughly 2 fl oz, 56 g, about 129 calories by our own arithmetic from the 100 g figure.

If you are tracking drinks rather than ounces, the NIAAA definition of a standard drink puts one at 1.5 fl oz of 80-proof spirits. Log the shot and you are logging one standard drink. Log the USDA "drink" and you are already past one and a half.

Crown Royal and Coke, and every other mixer

This is where the calories actually happen. USDA holds separate records for the mixed drinks, measured as a full 225 g glass, and the spread between them is far wider than anything the whiskey does on its own.

DrinkPer 100 gTypical glassCalories
Whiskey, neat231 kcal1 shot, 42 g97 kcal
Whiskey and water59 kcal1 drink, 225 g133 kcal
Whiskey and soda water59 kcal1 drink, 225 g133 kcal
Whiskey and diet cola60 kcal1 drink, 225 g135 kcal
Whiskey and cola89 kcal1 drink, 225 g200 kcal
Whiskey sour123 kcal1 drink, 225 g277 kcal

Crown Royal and Coke is 200 calories a glass and carries 16.8 g of total sugars, all of it from the soda — the whiskey contributed none. Swap to diet cola and the same glass falls to 135 calories with zero sugar. Soda water or plain water land a touch lower still at 133, and those two are effectively a shot plus a splash: the extra calories over a neat shot are simply the bigger pour of whiskey in the glass, not the mixer.

The whiskey sour is the outlier at 277 calories, close to three times a neat shot, because sour mix is sugar syrup and citrus. It also carries 173 mg of sodium against essentially none in the spirit.

Flavored bottles — Crown Royal Apple, Peach, Vanilla — are a different product: lower proof with sweetening added after distillation. USDA publishes no record for them, so there is no number on this page for them. Anything you see quoted online for a flavored whiskey shot is somebody's estimate, not a measured figure.

Proof is the only lever on the whiskey itself

Alcohol is the sole source of calories in a bottle of whiskey, so the proof on the label is the whole story. USDA lists the distilled-spirit strengths separately, and they climb in a straight line.

BottlingPer 100 g1.5 fl oz shot (42 g)
80 proof, 40% ABV231 kcal97 kcal
86 proof, 43% ABV250 kcal105 kcal
90 proof, 45% ABV263 kcal110 kcal
94 proof, 47% ABV275 kcal116 kcal
100 proof, 50% ABV295 kcal124 kcal

Every per-100-g figure is a USDA record. The shot column for every row below the 80-proof line is our own arithmetic from those 100 g figures, since USDA lists household pours only for the 80-proof entry.

Read it as a range rather than a cliff. The gap between a standard 80-proof pour and a cask-strength 100-proof pour is 27 calories a shot. Four drinks in, that is a bit over 100 calories of difference — real, but smaller than a single switch from cola to diet cola across those same four glasses.

Calories with nothing attached

The Quick Facts table is unusual for a reason worth stating plainly: a shot of Crown Royal reads 0% Daily Value on fat, saturated fat, carbohydrate, fiber, protein and sodium, using the FDA Daily Values for a 2,000-calorie diet, and still costs 97 calories. There is no other common item in a calorie log that is this cleanly one thing.

That has a practical edge and a practical trap. The edge: if you are watching carbs or sodium, straight whiskey does not touch either, which is why it survives on low-carb plans that rule out beer and most cocktails. The trap: 97 calories buy you no protein and no fiber, so they do nothing for how full you feel, and three shots across an evening is roughly a 291-calorie block that never registers as food.

If you are deciding how much to drink rather than how to log it, that is a question for the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which recommend that adults of legal drinking age either not drink or drink in moderation, with a lower limit for women than for men.

How does Crown Royal compare?

SpiritPer 100 gUS servingCalories
Crown Royal, 80-proof whiskey231 kcal1 fl oz, 28 g65 kcal
Scotch231 kcal1 fl oz, 28 g65 kcal
Vodka231 kcal1 fl oz, 28 g65 kcal
Gin231 kcal1 fl oz, 28 g65 kcal

Our take: at the same proof, the four are identical — 231 calories per 100 g, 65 per fluid ounce, four zeros down the nutrient column. Anyone telling you vodka is the "lighter" spirit is comparing pour sizes or mixers, not liquor. So pick by taste, then spend your attention where the numbers actually differ: keep the pour at a measured 1.5 fl oz, and mix with soda water or diet cola instead of regular cola. That one swap saves 65 calories a glass, which is more than the entire difference between 80-proof and 100-proof whiskey.

Crown Royal FAQs

How many calories are in a shot of Crown Royal?

A 1.5 fl oz shot weighs 42 g and carries 97 calories, based on USDA's 80-proof whiskey record at 231 calories per 100 g. There is no fat, no carbohydrate, no sugar and no protein in it. If you pour free-hand rather than measuring, assume more: USDA's own "1 drink" measure is 63 g and 146 calories.

How many calories in 1 oz of Crown Royal?

One fluid ounce is 28 g and 65 calories. An ounce by weight, 28.3 g, rounds to the same 65 calories — that one is our own arithmetic from the USDA 100 g figure rather than a USDA serving. A two-finger pour of roughly 2 fl oz comes to about 129 calories on the same math.

Does Crown Royal have carbs?

Zero. USDA lists 0 g of carbohydrate per 100 g and 0 g in a 42 g shot, which is 0% of the Daily Value. Distillation leaves the sugars and starches from the grain behind in the mash, so nothing carrying carbohydrate makes it into the bottle. Carbs in a whiskey drink come entirely from the mixer.

Does Crown Royal have sugar?

None — 0 g of total sugars per 100 g and 0 g in a shot. USDA publishes no added sugars figure for this record, and there is no carbohydrate for added sugar to hide in. A glass of whiskey and cola carries 16.8 g of total sugars in 225 g, all of it from the soda.

How many calories in Crown Royal and Coke?

A 225 g glass is 200 calories, at 89 calories per 100 g, with 17.6 g of carbohydrate and 16.8 g of sugars. The same glass built with diet cola drops to 135 calories and zero sugar. Soda water or plain water land at 133. The whiskey is unchanged in all four; only the mixer moves.

Is Crown Royal keto friendly?

On carbs, yes: 0 g per shot, so a neat pour or one on the rocks fits any carb limit. The 97 calories still count, and they arrive with no protein, no fiber and nothing that blunts appetite. The keto problem is rarely the whiskey; it is the cola, the sour mix or the ginger ale poured over it.

How many calories in a bottle of Crown Royal?

A 750 ml bottle works out to about 1,640 calories. That is our own arithmetic from the USDA figures — 750 ml is roughly 710 g of 80-proof whiskey at 231 calories per 100 g — and not a USDA serving. Put another way, one bottle is close to 17 measured shots at 97 calories each.

Does Crown Royal Apple have more calories than the original?

The original shot is 97 calories, and USDA publishes no record at all for the flavored bottles, so there is no measured number to give. Flavored whiskeys are bottled at a lower proof, which pulls calories down, but they are sweetened after distillation, which pushes them back up. Log it as an estimate, not a fact.
