Chicken ramen: calories, protein and sodium by serving

Percent of daily value uses the FDA reference of 2,000 kcal a day.

A big bowl is closer to 617 calories than 309

The 309-calorie figure is for 1 cup (245 g), and very few people stop at a cup. A typical restaurant or homemade bowl is closer to two cups, which is 490 g, 617 calories and 34.5 g of protein. That is a fair lunch on its own, with no sides.

Go bigger and the total climbs fast. Three cups (735 g) reach 926 calories, and a large shared pot of five cups (1,225 g) holds 1,544. Broth is mostly water, so the bowl looks light, but the noodles, fat and chicken add up with every ladle.

The simplest fix is to measure the bowl once. Pour your usual serving into a measuring cup, note how many cups it fills, and you will know whether your ramen night is 309, 617 or 926 calories. If you would rather skip the measuring, BodyPal can log a bowl from a photo.

Half the calories come from noodles

Carbs supply 49% of the calories in chicken ramen, fat 28% and protein 23%. Per 100 g that works out to 15.4 g of carbs, 3.9 g of fat and 7 g of protein. The carbs are almost all noodle starch: sugars are only 0.4 g and fiber just 1 g.

The chicken earns its place. One cup brings 17.2 g of protein, 34% of the daily value, which is more than most noodle soups manage. Fat is moderate at 9.5 g per cup, and saturated fat is low at 0.7 g per 100 g.

What the bowl lacks is fiber. At 2.5 g per cup, it will not keep you full for long on its own. If you want more staying power without many extra calories, add vegetables such as bok choy, spinach, mushrooms or scallions, or an extra portion of chicken for more protein.

Sodium is the row to watch

A single cup holds 867 mg of sodium, 38% of the daily value, while supplying only 15% of a day's calories. That gap is the real story of this soup. Per 100 g, sodium sits at 354 mg, 15% of the daily value.

Portions make it sharper. Two cups bring 1,735 mg, and three cups reach 2,602 mg, which is more than the full daily value in one meal. Five cups would carry 4,337 mg. Most of that sodium lives in the broth.

If you watch sodium, leave some broth in the bowl, use only part of a seasoning packet, or build the soup from low-sodium stock. Eating the noodles, chicken and vegetables while skipping the last of the liquid cuts sodium far more than it cuts calories.

The instant block is a different food

Packaged chicken ramen from brands such as Maruchan and Nissin is usually logged by the dry block. One instant block, dry (81 g), has 356 calories, 48.8 g of carbs and 14.2 g of fat. The noodles are fried before packing, which is why fat is higher than in a bowl with real chicken.

Protein goes the other way. The block gives 8.3 g, 17% of the daily value, about half of the 17.2 g in a cup of chicken ramen bowl. Sodium is the biggest jump: 1,558 mg, or 68% of the daily value, for one packet with its seasoning.

So log what you actually ate. A cooked bowl with chicken is the 1 cup (245 g) row; a packet of instant noodles is the 81 g block, whatever amount of water you add. Water adds volume, not calories.

How does chicken ramen compare?

Here is how chicken ramen stacks up against plain ramen, pork ramen and tonkotsu ramen, per 100 g and per usual serving.

Tonkotsu ramen1 serving (70 g)27038618.6 / 58.6 / 8.61,186 mg

Verdict: For the fewest calories pick pork ramen at 66 per 100 g, about half of chicken ramen, though it brings only 1.5 g of protein. For protein at the same energy cost chicken ramen and plain ramen are near twins at 126 and 127 calories with 7 g and 7.1 g of protein, while tonkotsu ramen at 386 calories and 1,186 mg sodium per 100 g is the one to save for a treat.
