How Many Calories Are in a Greek Gyro?
A standard Greek gyro weighs 200 g and carries 368 calories. Per 100 g the assembled sandwich runs 184 calories, which is lighter than most people expect, because the pita, lettuce, tomato and sauce dilute the meat rather than pile onto it. The meat alone is a different story.
You'd need to walk about 74 minutes to burn the 368 calories in one gyro sandwich (200 g).

Greek gyro quick facts
When you search for this, you are holding a wrapped sandwich, not a tray of sliced meat. So the numbers below come from the one USDA record that measures the whole thing: FNDDS 2706962, "Gyro sandwich", from the 2021-2023 survey release. It counts the pita, the shaved meat, the vegetables and the sauce together, at 200 g for one sandwich.
Every other USDA gyro entry is retail meat in a bag, a frozen kit or a heat-and-eat sandwich. Those are useful, and they get their own sections further down, but they answer a different question. Nothing here is averaged across records.
| Nutrient | Per 100 g | Per 1 sandwich (200 g) | % Daily Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calories | 184 | 368 | — |
| Total fat | 6.76 g | 13.5 g | 17% |
| Saturated fat | 2.52 g | 5.0 g | 25% |
| Carbohydrate | 18.78 g | 37.6 g | 14% |
| Dietary fiber | 1 g | 2.0 g | 7% |
| Total sugars | 1.74 g | 3.5 g | — |
| Protein | 11.24 g | 22.5 g | 45% |
| Sodium | 323 mg | 646 mg | 28% |
% Daily Value is based on a 2,000-calorie diet.
Verified nutrition data
Numbers on this page come from USDA FoodData Central, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food composition database, and from manufacturer labels where a branded product is named. Last verified September 2026. How we verify our data →
Two rows you will not see here: added sugars and trans fat. This edition of FNDDS does not publish either value for the record, and guessing them would be worse than leaving them out. Cholesterol comes in at 29 mg per 100 g, so 58 mg per sandwich, 19% of the Daily Value. Potassium is 205 mg per 100 g, 410 mg per sandwich, 9% of the Daily Value. The FDA's Daily Value reference sets the percentages used throughout this page.
One caveat worth stating plainly: USDA lists this serving as "1 sandwich, any size" at 200 g. Plenty of American gyros, especially at a Greek diner or a street cart, come in heavier than that. If yours feels oversized, treat 200 g as the floor.
US servings, from one ounce to a whole gyro
| Serving | Weight | Calories |
|---|---|---|
| 1 oz | 28 g | 52 kcal |
| 3 oz | 85 g | 156 kcal |
| Half a sandwich | 100 g | 184 kcal |
| One gyro sandwich, any size | 200 g | 368 kcal |
| Per 100 g | 100 g | 184 kcal |
Only the 200 g sandwich is an actual USDA household measure. The half sandwich, the 3 oz wedge and the single ounce are our own arithmetic scaled from the USDA 100 g figure, not USDA servings, which is why the half comes out at exactly 184.
That half-sandwich line does a lot of work. Splitting a gyro with someone puts lunch at 184 calories with 11.2 g of protein, which is closer to a snack than a meal. A whole one at 368 sits comfortably inside a 350 to 450 calorie lunch, and it brings 22.5 g of protein along with it, so it is not a sandwich that leaves you hunting for a second thing an hour later.
Gyro meat on its own: beef and lamb vs chicken
Here is the number that surprises people. The shaved beef-and-lamb cone is 345 calories per 100 g, almost double the 184 of the finished sandwich. The pita, lettuce, tomato and sauce are not what make a gyro heavy. They are what make the per-gram number look mild.
Swap the cone for flame-broiled chicken and you drop to 226 calories per 100 g, a gap of 119 calories per 100 g of meat. At the 3 oz (84 g) fill printed on the retail label, that is 290 calories against 190. Protein moves the other way: 11.9 g per 100 g for the beef and lamb slices, 20.24 g for the chicken.
Retail brands sit across a wide band per 100 g. Kronos Authentic Gyros Slices are 318 and the standard Kronos Gyros Slices 365; Opaa! Flame Broiled Beef is 345, its Premium line 402, and its chicken version 226. Devanco Foods Fully Cooked Gyros Slices land at 274 with almost no carbohydrate, 1.77 g per 100 g. If you cook gyros at home, the label on the bag matters more than the style of the sandwich.
| Version | Per 100 g | Typical portion | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beef and lamb gyro slices | 345 kcal | 3 oz (84 g) | 290 kcal |
| Chicken gyro slices | 226 kcal | 3 oz (84 g) | 190 kcal |
| Assembled gyro sandwich | 184 kcal | 1 sandwich (200 g) | 368 kcal |
Ready-made gyros, sliders and the pita alone
A gyro from the freezer case is not the same food as a gyro from the FNDDS record. The packaged version with tzatziki already in the wrap runs 279 calories per 100 g and 580 for a 208 g sandwich, well above the 368 of the survey record, because the sauce is portioned generously and the bread is often thicker.
| Version | Per 100 g | Typical piece | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gyro sandwich, as measured by USDA | 184 kcal | 1 sandwich (200 g) | 368 kcal |
| Ready-made gyro in pita with tzatziki | 279 kcal | 1 sandwich (208 g) | 580 kcal |
| Gyro slider or pocket sandwich | 254 kcal | 1 slider (63 g) | 160 kcal |
| Gyro pita flatbread, bread only | 278 kcal | 1 flatbread (79 g) | 220 kcal |
The flatbread row is the useful one. A single gyro pita is around 220 calories before anything goes into it, which is roughly 60% of a whole USDA-measured gyro. Order the meat and salad in a bowl instead of a wrap and you have removed more calories than switching from beef to chicken would give you. Sliders are the other easy lever: at 63 g each, two of them come to 320 calories, still under one full gyro.
Sodium, not fat, is the row to watch
The instinct with a gyro is to worry about fat. The numbers do not agree. One sandwich is 13.5 g of total fat, 17% of the Daily Value, which is unremarkable for a lunch. Sodium is 646 mg, 28% of the Daily Value, or a bit more than a quarter teaspoon of table salt in one hand-held item.
The retail meat is saltier still per gram: 964 mg per 100 g for the Opaa! beef slices, 912 mg for Devanco, 788 to 835 mg across the Kronos lines. Add feta, olives or a second ladle of tzatziki and a home-built gyro can pass the sandwich figure comfortably. If you are watching sodium, the gyro is a better candidate for a smaller pita than for a leaner meat.
Saturated fat deserves one line too. At 5 g per sandwich, a gyro uses 25% of the Daily Value, and the Dietary Guidelines for Americans keep saturated fat under 10% of daily calories. That is a quarter of the day's allowance, not a problem, but it is worth knowing before the second one. On the plus side, 22.5 g of protein from a single sandwich is a real contribution toward the protein foods group.
How does a Greek gyro compare?
USDA lists the neighboring sandwiches as "any size" without a gram weight in our extract, so this table stays on the honest common ground of 100 g rather than inventing serving weights.
| Sandwich | Per 100 g | Protein per 100 g | Fat per 100 g |
|---|---|---|---|
| Greek gyro | 184 kcal | 11.24 g | 6.76 g |
| Sloppy joe, on white bun | 185 kcal | 11.32 g | 6.42 g |
| Barbecue chicken, on white bun | 204 kcal | 15.92 g | 4.4 g |
| Meatball sandwich or sub | 207 kcal | 11.3 g | 8.23 g |
Our take: the gyro is the lightest of these four per 100 g, but only by a single calorie over a sloppy joe, so anyone telling you a gyro is a diet sandwich is reading too much into a rounding difference. Where it actually wins is portion control, since a gyro is a defined 200 g wrap while a meatball sub grows with the length of the bread. Where it loses is protein density, the lowest of the four per 100 g. For weight loss, order the chicken gyro and skip half the pita; for staying full on the same calories, the barbecue chicken sandwich gives more protein per gram.

Greek gyro FAQs
How many calories are in a Greek gyro?
A 200 g gyro sandwich carries 368 calories, at 184 calories per 100 g. That covers the pita, the sliced meat, the salad and the sauce as USDA's FNDDS record measures them. Restaurant gyros are often heavier than 200 g, so weigh yours if it feels oversized.
How many calories in gyro meat per ounce?
One ounce (28 g) of beef and lamb gyro slices is about 97 calories, and one ounce of chicken gyro slices about 63. Both are our own arithmetic from the USDA per-100-g figures of 345 and 226 calories, not USDA servings. Three ounces is the usual sandwich fill.
How much protein is in a gyro?
One gyro sandwich delivers 22.5 g of protein, 45% of the Daily Value, from 11.24 g per 100 g. Chicken gyro slices are denser still at 20.24 g per 100 g. For a sandwich in the 350 to 400 calorie range, that protein-to-calorie ratio is genuinely good.
How much sodium is in a gyro sandwich?
A 200 g gyro sandwich holds 646 mg of sodium, 28% of the Daily Value and a bit more than a quarter teaspoon of table salt. That is before extra feta or olives. The retail meat is saltier per gram: 964 mg per 100 g for Opaa! beef slices.
Chicken gyro vs beef gyro calories?
Chicken gyro slices run 226 calories per 100 g against 345 for the beef and lamb cone, a gap of 119. At a 3 oz (84 g) fill that is 190 calories versus 290. The chicken version also carries more protein: 20.24 g per 100 g against 11.9 g.
How many calories in a gyro without pita?
A 3 oz (84 g) portion of beef and lamb gyro meat is 290 calories on its own; chicken slices are 190. The gyro pita flatbread alone accounts for roughly 220 calories at 79 g, so skipping the bread saves more than twice what switching the meat saves.
How many carbs are in a gyro?
One gyro sandwich has 37.6 g of carbohydrate, 14% of the Daily Value, plus 2 g of fiber and 3.5 g of total sugars. Almost all of it is the pita: the meat slices themselves sit near 9.5 g per 100 g, and some brands are under 2 g.
Is gyro meat high in saturated fat?
One sandwich carries 5 g of saturated fat, 25% of the Daily Value in a single lunch. USDA's branded gyro-meat records do not publish saturated fat, so the sandwich figure is the reliable one. The Dietary Guidelines cap saturated fat at under 10% of daily calories.
