How many calories are in a can of Red Bull?
The slim 8.4 fl oz can weighs 258 g and carries 111 calories. Per 100 g the drink runs 43 calories, which is light for something this sweet. The catch is the can you pick up: the 12 fl oz version is the same liquid at 159 calories, and almost every calorie in either one is sugar.
You'd need to walk about 22 minutes to burn the 111 calories in one 8.4 fl oz can (258 g).

Red Bull quick facts
The numbers below come from SR Legacy record 173210, "Beverages, Energy drink, RED BULL". USDA also publishes a survey version of the same drink (FNDDS 2710752) with identical values per 100 g. We use the SR Legacy row because it sits higher in the reference hierarchy and because it carries household portions for the exact cans sold here: 8.4, 12 and 16 fluid ounces.

Verified nutrition data
Numbers on this page come from USDA FoodData Central, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food composition database, and from manufacturer labels where a branded product is named. Last verified September 2026. How we verify our data →
There is no added-sugars row above, and that is not an oversight. This edition of the USDA record has no added-sugars field at all, so we cannot print a figure for it. Cholesterol is 0 mg. Potassium is 3 mg per 100 g, or 8 mg in the can, which rounds to 0% of the Daily Value and is not worth counting.
One more absence worth naming: caffeine. It is the reason most people reach for the can, but this USDA record does not carry a caffeine value, so we do not quote one here. Read it off the label instead. Everything on this page is about the calories.
US servings, from one ounce to a 16 oz can
| Serving | Weight | Calories |
|---|---|---|
| 1 fl oz | 31 g | 13 kcal |
| 1 cup (8 fl oz) | 248 g | 107 kcal |
| One can, 8.4 fl oz | 258 g | 111 kcal |
| One can, 12 fl oz | 369 g | 159 kcal |
| One can, 16 fl oz | 492 g | 212 kcal |
| Per 100 g | 100 g | 43 kcal |
The three can sizes are USDA household measures, so those weights and calories are the published ones. The cup and the single fluid ounce are our own arithmetic from the USDA 100 g figure, not USDA servings, and they exist mostly so you can price a splash poured over ice or a half can left in the fridge.
Notice how close the 8 fl oz cup and the 8.4 fl oz can sit: 107 against 111 calories. A cup measure is a fine stand-in if you are logging from memory. What is not a fine stand-in is treating every can as one unit, which is where most tracking of this drink goes wrong.
The 12 oz and 16 oz cans
Same recipe, same 43 calories per 100 g, three very different totals. The 12 fl oz can weighs 369 g and lands at 159 calories, which is 43% more than the slim can for a container that does not look much bigger on a shelf. The 16 fl oz can weighs 492 g and reaches 212 calories, close to double the 8.4 fl oz.
Sugar moves with the volume, and it moves faster than people expect because the starting point is already high. The slim can holds 26.4 g of sugars. The 12 fl oz can holds 37.7 g. The 16 fl oz can holds 50.3 g. Carbohydrate follows the same arc: 10% of the Daily Value in the small can, 14% in the 12 oz, 18% in the 16 oz.
Protein and fat stay irrelevant at every size. The 12 fl oz can has 1.7 g of protein and no fat at all, so there is nothing in the drink to slow the sugar down or to leave you full. Treat any of these as a beverage-shaped snack, not as part of a meal.
Red Bull Sugarfree and the flavored editions
| Version | Per 100 g | Typical can | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic, 8.4 fl oz | 43 kcal | 258 g | 111 kcal |
| Classic, 12 fl oz | 43 kcal | 369 g | 159 kcal |
| Classic, 16 fl oz | 43 kcal | 492 g | 212 kcal |
| Sugarfree, 8.3 fl oz | 5 kcal | 250 g | 13 kcal |
| Tropical, Yellow Edition, 8.4 fl oz | 48 kcal | 250 mL | 120 kcal |
| Winter Edition Arctic Berry, 8.4 fl oz | 44 kcal | 250 mL | 110 kcal |
Sugarfree is the only version that changes the math rather than the volume. At 5 calories per 100 g it costs 13 calories a can, 98 fewer than the classic, with sugars at zero and carbohydrate down to 0.7 g per 100 g. If the can is a daily habit, that swap is worth more than any adjustment you would make at lunch.
The flavored editions are ordinary Red Bull with a different profile. USDA's branded entries put Tropical, the Yellow Edition, at 48 calories per 100 g and 120 calories a can, the densest of the Red Bull rows in the database, while Winter Edition Arctic Berry sits at 44 and 110. The 12 fl oz branded cans, including Lime, are labeled at 160 calories, which is one calorie off the 159 we get from the reference record, and that gap is rounding on the label rather than a different drink.
Sugar and sodium are the rows to watch
Two things surprise people when they look at the full panel. The first is how little the percentages tell you. Carbohydrate in the slim can reads as a mild 10% of the FDA Daily Value, which sounds like a rounding error in a day of eating. But total sugars have no Daily Value at all, so the one row that actually describes this drink shows a dash. The 26.4 g is the number to look at, and it is a beverage you finish in four minutes.
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans advise keeping added sugars under 10% of daily calories. We cannot tell you what share of that this can uses, because the USDA record has no added-sugars field to quote, and we are not going to guess by treating total sugars as if they were the same measurement.
The second surprise runs the other way. Sodium is 101 mg in the classic can, 4% of the Daily Value, essentially nothing. Sugarfree carries 83 mg per 100 g against the classic's 39 mg, which is 208 mg a can, or 9%. The lighter drink is the saltier one. That is still a small amount, roughly a tenth of a teaspoon of table salt, but if you are watching sodium and drinking two or three a day, it is the version worth checking.
How does Red Bull compare?
| Drink | Per 100 g | US serving | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Bull | 43 kcal | 1 cup, 248 g | 107 kcal |
| Monster | 47 kcal | 1 cup, 248 g | 117 kcal |
| NOS | 44 kcal | 1 cup, 248 g | 109 kcal |
| Powerade | 32 kcal | 1 cup, 248 g | 79 kcal |
All four are priced per cup here so the comparison is honest, and all four cup figures are our own arithmetic from the USDA 100 g values rather than USDA servings. Of the four, only Powerade is lighter per gram.
Our take: as a category, these drinks are close enough that brand choice barely matters, and the 10-calorie spread between Red Bull and Monster per cup is noise. Container size is the whole story. Monster ships in 16 oz cans as standard, so the real-world comparison is a 111-calorie slim Red Bull against something nearer 230 calories, and the shelf, not the recipe, decides that. If you want the drink and not the calories, Sugarfree at 13 a can settles it outright. If you want the classic taste, buy the 8.4 fl oz can and do not reach for the 16.

A standard 8.4 fl oz can holds 111 calories, from 258 g of liquid at 43 calories per 100 g. Almost all of it is sugar: 26.4 g of carbohydrate, and 26.4 g of that is sugars. Fat and fiber are both zero, and protein is 1.2 g.
How many calories are in a 12 oz Red Bull?
The 12 fl oz can is 159 calories. It weighs 369 g in the USDA record, and at the same 43 calories per 100 g that works out 43% above the 8.4 fl oz can. Sugars climb with it, from 26.4 g to 37.7 g, and carbohydrate reaches 14% of the Daily Value.
How much sugar is in a Red Bull?
An 8.4 fl oz can carries 26.4 g of sugars, the 12 fl oz can 37.7 g and the 16 fl oz can 50.3 g. Per 100 g that is 10.22 g out of 10.23 g of carbohydrate, so sugar is essentially the entire carbohydrate content. USDA does not break out added sugars for this record.
How many calories are in Red Bull Sugarfree?
Red Bull Sugarfree is 13 calories for an 8.3 fl oz can, or 5 calories per 100 g. That is 98 calories less than the classic can. Sugars drop to zero and carbohydrate to 0.7 g per 100 g, but sodium roughly doubles, from 39 mg per 100 g to 83 mg.
Does Red Bull have carbs?
Yes, 26.4 g of carbohydrate in an 8.4 fl oz can, which is 10% of the Daily Value. Nearly all of it is sugar, 10.22 g of the 10.23 g per 100 g, with zero fiber. The 12 fl oz can takes carbohydrate to 37.7 g and the 16 fl oz can to 50.3 g.
Is Red Bull high in sodium?
No, 101 mg per 8.4 fl oz can, which is 4% of the 2,300 mg Daily Value and about a twentieth of a teaspoon of table salt. Sugarfree is the saltier one at 208 mg a can, or 9%. That is the opposite of what most people expect from the lighter version.
How many calories are in Red Bull Tropical?
Red Bull Tropical, the Yellow Edition, is 120 calories for a 250 mL can, at 48 calories per 100 g. That is the highest energy density among the Red Bull entries in USDA's branded database, and 9 calories above the 111 in the classic 8.4 fl oz can.
How many calories are in 100 ml of Red Bull?
About 44 calories. USDA publishes 43 calories per 100 g, and a 250 mL can weighs 258 g in the record, so 100 mL is roughly 103 g. That conversion is our own arithmetic from the USDA figures, not a USDA serving; the sugar makes the drink slightly denser than water.
