How Many Calories Are in a Baguette?
A mini baguette, the 9-inch loaf most bakeries sell as one person's bread, weighs 152 g and carries 413 calories. Per 100 g the bread runs 272 calories. A medium slice cut from a larger loaf is 174, and the full 22-inch baguette lands at 881 before butter.
You'd need to walk about 83 minutes to burn the 413 calories in one mini baguette (152 g).

Baguette quick facts
The number here comes from the USDA record FNDDS 2707610, "Bread, French or Vienna". It is the only USDA entry that carries real baguette measures rather than generic slices: a 9-inch mini loaf at 152 g and a 22-inch loaf at 324 g. Its per-100-g values are identical to the older SR Legacy record 172675, so nothing is lost by using the newer one.
The mini loaf is the serving in the table below, because that is the unit people actually pick up — a bakery baguette handed over in paper, not a weighed portion. Shape varies a lot in the US, from short rustic loaves to the long thin classic; USDA counts grams, not inches, so a squat loaf and a slim one of the same weight give the same number.
| Nutrient | Per 100 g | Per 1 mini baguette (152 g) | % Daily Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calories | 272 | 413 | — |
| Total fat | 2.42 g | 3.7 g | 5% |
| Saturated fat | 0.53 g | 0.8 g | 4% |
| Carbohydrate | 51.88 g | 78.9 g | 29% |

Verified nutrition data
Numbers on this page come from USDA FoodData Central, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food composition database, and from manufacturer labels where a branded product is named. Last verified September 2026. How we verify our data →
There is no added sugars row and no trans fat row on this page. This edition of the USDA database does not publish either value for the record, and estimating them would mean inventing numbers. Total sugars have no Daily Value of their own, which is why that cell is a dash.
US servings from one slice to a whole loaf
| Serving | Weight | Calories |
|---|---|---|
| 1 oz | 28 g | 77 kcal |
| 1 medium slice | 64 g | 174 kcal |
| 1 individual loaf | 82 g | 223 kcal |
| 1 mini baguette, about 9 inches | 152 g | 413 kcal |
| 1 baguette, about 22 inches | 324 g | 881 kcal |
| Per 100 g | 100 g | 272 kcal |
Four of those are USDA household measures: the medium slice, the individual loaf, the mini baguette and the full 22-inch loaf. The 1 oz row is our own arithmetic from the USDA 100 g figure, not a USDA serving, and it exists because deli counters and packaged baguettes still label by the ounce.
Half a baguette is the serving people ask about most and the one no database lists. Half of the 22-inch loaf is 162 g, which works out to 441 calories and 975 mg of sodium — again our own scaling from the 100 g number rather than a USDA measure. That is a lunch-sized figure hiding inside something most people count as a side.
Retail labels sit close to the USDA average without matching it. Across six US supermarket baguettes in the USDA Branded database, per-100-g calories run from 242 to 281, with label servings as odd as a quarter loaf (56 g), five slices (54 g) and a flat 3.5 oz. If your package gives grams, use the package. If it only gives "1/2 baguette," weigh it once and you will know for good.
Whole wheat toasted and sourdough baguettes
| Version | Per 100 g | Typical serving | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain French or Vienna | 272 kcal | 1 mini loaf, 152 g | 413 kcal |
| Whole wheat | 239 kcal | 1 mini loaf, 152 g | 363 kcal |
| Toasted | 299 kcal | 1 medium slice, 59 g | 176 kcal |
| Whole wheat, toasted | 263 kcal | 1 medium slice, 59 g | 155 kcal |
| Sourdough or French bread, older record | 272 kcal | 1 oz, 28 g | 77 kcal |
| Toasted sourdough, older record | 319 kcal | 1 medium slice, 59 g | 188 kcal |
Whole wheat is the only version that genuinely changes the math. Same 152 g mini loaf, 363 calories instead of 413, and the fiber nearly doubles: 6.4 g against 3.3 g, or 23% of the Daily Value from one loaf. Sodium drops too, to 570 mg from 914 mg. One caution on that record — USDA lists its total sugars as 0 g, which reflects how that entry was compiled rather than a bread with no sugar in it at all.
Toasting is the trap. Per 100 g the toasted record reads 299 calories against 272, and that looks like toast costs you something. It does not. Water leaves the bread, so the same food weighs less and every gram concentrates. A fresh medium slice is 64 g and 174 calories; the toasted slice USDA measures is 59 g and 176. Two calories apart, and the difference is evaporation, not the toaster.
Sourdough sold as French bread lands on the same record as the plain baguette in the current database: 272 calories per 100 g, identical protein, carbohydrate and fat. The older toasted sourdough entry is the outlier at 319 per 100 g, from a heavier toast in a different edition of the data. Use it only if your bread comes out dark and dry.
Sodium is the row to watch
Fat is a non-event here. A mini baguette carries 3.7 g of total fat, 5% of the Daily Value, and 0.8 g of saturated fat, 4%. Even the whole 22-inch loaf reaches only 10% of the fat DV. Protein does better than most people expect from bread: 16.3 g in the mini loaf, 33% of the DV, which is why a baguette with cheese behaves less like a snack and more like a meal.
Sodium is where a baguette gets expensive. The mini loaf holds 914 mg, 40% of the FDA Daily Value of 2,300 mg — roughly two-fifths of a teaspoon of table salt, none of which you taste as salty. Eat the whole 22-inch loaf across a day of sandwiches and you are at 1,951 mg, about 85% of the day's sodium from bread alone, with the fat column still around a tenth.
That is not a reason to skip bread. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans put grains at the center of the plate, and MyPlate asks that at least half of them be whole grains. If you are watching sodium, the whole wheat baguette does two jobs at once: 570 mg instead of 914 for the same loaf, and nearly double the fiber.
How does a baguette compare?
| Bread | Per 100 g | US serving | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baguette, French or Vienna | 272 kcal | 1 oz, 28 g | 77 kcal |
| Sourdough | 272 kcal | 1 oz, 28 g | 77 kcal |
| White bread, bakery | 272 kcal | 1 oz, 28 g | 77 kcal |
| Raisin bread | 270 kcal | 1 oz, 28 g | 77 kcal |
Our take: per gram, these four are the same bread. Three of them sit at exactly 272 calories per 100 g and raisin bread is the lightest of the group by two calories, which is noise. Swapping a baguette for bakery white or sourdough changes nothing you can measure. What changes everything is format — sandwich bread arrives in 28 g slices, a baguette arrives as a 152 g loaf, and nobody eats a fifth of one. For weight loss, cut a 64 g slice off a big loaf and stop at 174 calories. For staying full, take the whole wheat mini loaf: 363 calories and 6.4 g of fiber beat 413 and 3.3 g every time.

Baguette FAQs
How many calories are in a whole baguette?
A full 22-inch baguette weighs 324 g and holds 881 calories, based on the USDA figure of 272 calories per 100 g. It also carries 1,951 mg of sodium, about 85% of the daily limit, and 168 g of carbohydrate. Most people split one across a table.
How many calories are in one slice of baguette?
One medium slice weighs 64 g and comes to 174 calories. That slice brings 33.2 g of carbohydrate, 6.9 g of protein and 385 mg of sodium. Bakery slices vary more than sandwich bread does, so a thick cut off a fat rustic loaf can easily run half again as much.
How many calories are in half a baguette?
Half of a 22-inch loaf is 162 g and works out to 441 calories, our own arithmetic from the USDA 100 g figure rather than a listed serving. Half a smaller 9-inch mini loaf is 76 g and about 207 calories. Weigh yours once and the guessing ends.
How many carbs are in a baguette?
A 152 g mini baguette holds 78.9 g of carbohydrate, 29% of the Daily Value, of which 3.3 g is fiber and 7.0 g is total sugars. Per 100 g that is 51.88 g. One medium slice at 64 g comes to 33.2 g of carbohydrate.
How much sodium is in a baguette?
A mini baguette carries 914 mg of sodium, 40% of the FDA Daily Value of 2,300 mg, and the full 22-inch loaf reaches 1,951 mg. That is roughly two-fifths of a teaspoon of table salt in the mini loaf. The whole wheat version is lower at 570 mg.
Does toasting a baguette change the calories?
Almost none — a fresh medium slice is 64 g and 174 calories; the toasted slice USDA measures is 59 g and 176 calories. Per 100 g the toasted figure rises from 272 to 299, but that is water leaving the bread, not calories arriving. Butter on the toast is the real cost.
Is a whole wheat baguette lower in calories?
Yes, 363 calories for a 152 g mini loaf against 413 for the plain version, or 239 per 100 g against 272. Fiber nearly doubles to 6.4 g per loaf, 23% of the Daily Value, and sodium falls to 570 mg. It is the best trade on this page.
Is a baguette good for weight loss?
At 77 calories per ounce it is no denser than sourdough or bakery white bread, so the bread is not the problem. Portion size is: a mini loaf is 413 calories before anything goes on it. Cut a 64 g slice for 174 calories and the same bread fits a normal day.
