How many calories are in a Bloody Mary?

One drink weighs 225 g and carries 164 calories. Per 100 g the finished cocktail runs 73 calories, which makes it one of the lighter things on a brunch menu. The tomato juice is not what costs you. The vodka is, and the sodium behind it is the number most people never check.

You'd need to walk about 33 minutes to burn the 164 calories in one drink (225 g).

Bloody Mary quick facts

The record used here is FNDDS 2710628, "Bloody Mary", the survey entry for the finished cocktail with vodka in it. That is deliberate. The other Bloody Mary entries in FoodData Central are branded mixers sold in a bottle, and nobody drinks a mixer straight at brunch. If you are holding a glass a bartender handed you, this is your row.

USDA sizes that glass at 225 g, which is the household measure attached to the record. Bars pour looser than that, so the servings table below scales the same 100 g figures up to a cup and to a 12 fl oz tall glass.

Verified nutrition data

Numbers on this page come from USDA FoodData Central, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food composition database, and from manufacturer labels where a branded product is named. Last verified September 2026. How we verify our data →

Two label rows are missing on purpose: USDA does not publish added sugars or trans fat for cocktails in this FNDDS release, so guessing them would be worse than leaving them out. Cholesterol is 0 mg, as you would expect from juice and spirits. Potassium is the quiet upside at 374 mg per drink, 8% of the Daily Value, and it comes from the tomato juice.

Only the 225 g drink, the 1 fl oz pour and the 100 g base are USDA figures. The cup, the tall glass and the ounce by weight are our own arithmetic from the USDA 100 g figure, not USDA servings.

That gap is the cheapest calorie mistake in this whole drink. A 12 fl oz glass with ice, celery and a lime wedge looks almost identical to a short pour across a table, but it is 263 calories against 164 for the USDA drink, 60% more for the same order. If you log "one Bloody Mary" out of habit and the bar serves it tall, you are under-counting by about a hundred calories every time.

Virgin Mary, skinny mixer and the tall pour

Take the vodka out and the drink collapses. An 8 fl oz pour of Master of Mixes Bloody Mary Mixer is 50 calories against 175 for the same volume of the finished cocktail, so roughly 71% of what you drink comes from the alcohol, not the tomato. A "skinny" mixer is not the lever people think it is: at 29 calories per 100 g it lands at 70 calories for the same 8 fl oz, twenty higher than the regular mixer it is marketed against.

Branded mixers across the shelf run 17 to 33 calories per 100 g — Tony Chachere's at the bottom, Ripe Bar Juice and Stonewall Kitchen at the top. That spread is worth about 38 calories on an 8 fl oz pour, which is real but small next to the shot going in on top of it.

Sodium is the row to watch

Every other percentage on this label is single digits. Sodium is 20% of the Daily Value in one drink, 450 mg, or about a fifth of a teaspoon of table salt — and the FDA Daily Value for sodium is 2,300 mg a day. Order two at brunch and you have spent 900 mg, close to 40% of the day, before food arrives.

That matters more than the calories here, because most Americans already run over the limit; the CDC's sodium pages and the Dietary Guidelines both put the ceiling at 2,300 mg. If you are watching sodium, a Bloody Mary is the expensive choice on the cocktail list even though it is one of the lighter ones by calorie. A vodka soda or a mojito costs you almost nothing in salt. This one costs a fifth of your day.

The tall glass makes it worse in the same proportion as the calories: 360 g works out to 720 mg of sodium, 31% of the Daily Value, from our own scaling of the USDA 100 g figure.

How does a Bloody Mary compare?

Vodka and tonic84 kcal8 fl oz, 240 g202 kcal
Gin and tonic84 kcal8 fl oz, 240 g202 kcal
Mojito61 kcal8 fl oz, 240 g146 kcal

The Bloody Mary figure in this table is our own arithmetic at 8 fl oz so all four sit on the same volume; the USDA serving for it is the 225 g drink at 164 calories.

Our take: of these four, only the mojito is lighter, and only by 29 calories. If the goal is fewer calories per glass, the Bloody Mary already beats both tonic drinks by 27 calories at the same pour, because tonic water is sugar and tomato juice mostly is not. If the goal is less sodium, flip the ranking entirely — 200 mg per 100 g here against 4 mg for the vodka and tonic and 3 mg for the mojito. Pick the Bloody Mary when you want something that drinks like food and keeps carbs at 3.8 g per 100 g. Skip it when your blood pressure numbers are the ones you are tracking.

Bloody Mary FAQs

How many calories are in a Bloody Mary?

A standard Bloody Mary is 164 calories for one drink of 225 grams, which works out to 73 calories per 100 grams. Almost all of that comes from the vodka rather than the tomato juice, so the number barely moves whether the mix is spicy, peppery or loaded with horseradish.

How many calories in a 12 oz Bloody Mary?

A 12 fl oz tall glass holds about 360 grams and carries 263 calories, our own arithmetic from the USDA figure of 73 calories per 100 grams. That is 60 percent more than the 164-calorie USDA drink, and the two glasses look almost the same on a brunch table.

How much sodium is in a Bloody Mary?

One drink of 225 grams carries 450 milligrams of sodium, 20 percent of the 2,300 milligram Daily Value and roughly a fifth of a teaspoon of table salt. That is the highest percentage anywhere on this label, well above the calorie, carbohydrate and protein rows.

How many carbs are in a Bloody Mary?

One drink has 8.6 grams of carbohydrate, 3 percent of the Daily Value, including 5.1 grams of total sugars and 0.9 grams of fiber. Per 100 grams that is only 3.8 grams, which makes it one of the lower-carb mixed drinks on a standard cocktail list.

How many calories in a Virgin Mary with no alcohol?

A Virgin Mary poured from mixer alone is about 50 calories for 8 fl oz, based on Master of Mixes Bloody Mary Mixer at 21 calories per 100 grams. Dropping the vodka takes an 8 fl oz pour from 175 calories down to 50, a cut of roughly 71 percent.

How many calories in Bloody Mary mix alone?

Bloody Mary mix on its own runs 17 to 33 calories per 100 grams across six US branded products, so a 3 fl oz label serving lands between 15 and 30 calories. Tony Chachere's is the lightest at 17 per 100 grams, while Ripe Bar Juice and Stonewall Kitchen both sit at 33.

Does a Bloody Mary count as a serving of vegetables?

One drink is 225 grams, mostly tomato juice, and it brings 0.9 grams of fiber and 374 milligrams of potassium. MyPlate counts 100 percent vegetable juice toward the vegetable group, but a bar pour is cut with vodka and ice, so treat it as a partial serving at best rather than a full one.

How many calories in a Bloody Mary with celery and olives?

The 164-calorie figure covers the liquid only. USDA publishes no record for a loaded Bloody Mary, so celery, olives, pickles or a bacon strip are not inside that number and have to be logged separately. A celery stalk changes little; a full skewer of cheese and meat does not.
