How many calories are in a Klondike bar?

One Klondike Original bar weighs 85 g and carries 250 calories. Per 100 g it runs 294 calories, denser per gram than the tubs of ice cream sitting a shelf away, because the chocolate coating is fat almost end to end. Two bars out of the box put 500 calories on the day.

You'd need to walk about 50 minutes to burn the 250 calories in one bar (85 g).

Klondike bar quick facts

The numbers below come from the label of the bar you actually unwrap: USDA Branded record 2677001, "The Original Flavored Vanilla Light Ice Cream in a Milk Chocolate Flavored Coating Bars," matched by GTIN 075856001105. That record sets the serving at 1 bar, 85 g, which is exactly how the product leaves the box.

The older SR Legacy entries under the Klondike name are all SLIM-A-BEAR items — the No Sugar Added stickless bar, the vanilla sandwich and the 98% fat free fudge bar — from a diet line that is not the Original. Using one of those for a classic silver-foil bar would undercount it badly, so they stay out of the main table and show up further down as context.

Two rows that usually go missing are here: added sugars, 18.0 g a bar, and trans fat, which the label lists as 0 g. Cholesterol is 10 mg a bar and potassium 180 mg, 3% and 4% of a day, so neither is worth a line in your log. Sodium at 65 mg is a rounding error next to the 2,300 mg limit — this is a dessert whose whole story is fat and sugar.

Half a bar42.5 g125 kcal
One bar, the label serving85 g250 kcal
Two bars170 g500 kcal

Only the 85 g line is a USDA serving. The ounce, the half bar and the two-bar row are our own arithmetic from the USDA 100 g figure, not USDA servings, which is worth knowing if you are reconciling a food log against a label.

The half bar deserves a warning. A Klondike is a solid slab, not a scoopable pint, so cutting it in half means putting a frozen, coated block back in the freezer half-eaten. In practice almost nobody logs 125 calories here; they log 250, or they log 500 because the second one came out of the box while the first was still in hand. Plan for the whole bar and you will be right far more often.

An ounce, at 83 calories, is useful mostly as a mental yardstick: the bar is running roughly 3 calories a gram, the same neighborhood as a chocolate chip cookie, and that is before you notice it disappears in about six bites.

Every Klondike flavor, side by side

The spread across the freezer case is narrower than the flavor names suggest. Four of these six bars land within ten calories of each other, and the reason is the coating: it is the same weight of the same fat on almost every one of them.

What changes is where the calories come from. Krunch swaps some sugar for crisped rice and more fat — 21.95 g of sugars per 100 g against the Original's 27.06 g, but 14.63 g of saturated fat against 12.94 g. Double Chocolate uses chocolate ice cream in the center, which is lower in sugar (22.35 g per 100 g) yet still lands at 240 calories a bar. Caramel & Peanuts is the densest of the lot at 325 calories per 100 g; it only matches the Original's 250 because the bar itself is smaller, 77 g instead of 85 g.

That is the useful trick here. When two bars show the same calorie count, check the gram weight before you assume they are the same food. Caramel & Peanuts gives you 10% less bar for the same 250 calories.

Minis and the No Sugar Added bar

These are the two products people reach for when they want the Klondike to cost less, and both behave differently than expected.

Klondike Minis run 304 calories per 100 g — higher than the Original's 294, because a smaller bar has more surface area, and more surface area means more coating per gram of ice cream. The label serving is three snack bars, 115 g, which comes to 350 calories. That is 100 calories more than one full-size bar. A single mini, by our own arithmetic from the 100 g figure, is about 117 calories, so two of them (234) is the honest substitute for one Original, not three.

The No Sugar Added vanilla bar is the genuine saving, but a smaller one than the name implies: 230 calories per 100 g, 170 calories for the 74 g bar. Sugars fall hard, from 27.06 g per 100 g to 8.11 g, because sweeteners replace the sugar in the center. Calories fall only about a fifth, because the coating does not change — 12.16 g of fat per 100 g against 16.47 g. If your reason for buying it is blood sugar or added sugars, it does its job. If your reason is calories, you are saving 80 per bar, not half.

The Classic Vanilla Sandwich is the quiet winner on fat: wafers instead of coating drop it to 6.49 g of fat per 100 g and 180 calories a sandwich. It pays for that with sodium, 182 mg per 100 g against 76 mg in the coated bar, which is still small in absolute terms but more than double.

Saturated fat is the row to watch

Calories are not the interesting number on this label. Saturated fat is. One bar carries 11.0 g, which is 55% of the FDA Daily Value of 20 g — more than half a day's allowance from a 250-calorie dessert. Very few foods that small hit that hard; the FDA's Daily Value reference puts 20% or more per serving in the "high" bracket, and this is nearly triple that.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans advise keeping saturated fat under 10% of daily calories, which is about 22 g on a 2,000-calorie day. One Klondike is half of it. Two is all of it, with dinner still to come.

Added sugars are the second flag: 18.0 g a bar, 36% of the 50 g Daily Value. Total sugars, 23.0 g, have no Daily Value at all — the gap between the two figures is lactose from the ice cream, which is why the added-sugars line is the one worth logging.

None of this makes the bar off-limits. It makes it a planned dessert rather than an afterthought. If you are watching saturated fat specifically, the No Sugar Added bar (10.81 g per 100 g) or the vanilla sandwich (3.9 g per 100 g) do far more for you than cutting the Original in half. And if the freezer is your main source of dairy calories, MyPlate's dairy guidance is a reminder that frozen desserts count toward the group without carrying much of what the group is meant to provide — 3.0 g of protein and 180 mg of potassium a bar is not a lot.

How does a Klondike bar compare?

Low-carbohydrate chocolate ice cream237 kcal3.5 fl oz cup, 58 g137 kcal
Rich vanilla ice cream249 kcal1/2 cup, 107 g266 kcal

Our take: the Klondike is the densest of these four per gram — 294 calories per 100 g, ahead of all three — and it is dense for one reason, the coating. But density is not the same as damage. Half a cup of rich vanilla ice cream, 266 calories, actually costs more than the whole bar, because nobody serves themselves 85 g of ice cream from a tub. For portion control, the foil wrapper is doing real work: it ends the serving for you. Buy the bar if you tend to keep scooping; buy the pint if you genuinely stop at half a cup.

Klondike's own lineup, sold nationally in the six-pack format, is where most people's choices actually happen — Original, Krunch, Double Chocolate, Caramel & Peanuts, No Sugar Added and the Classic Vanilla Sandwich, all within 170 to 250 calories per piece.
