How many calories are in a Slurpee?

A small cup, 360 g of frozen drink, is 101 calories. Per 100 g the slush runs 28 calories, which is lighter per gram than almost anything else sold cold at a gas station. The whole number is carbohydrate: 27.6 g of sugar in that small cup, no fat, no protein.

You'd need to walk about 20 minutes to burn the 101 calories in one small cup (360 g).

Slurpee quick facts

Slurpee is 7-Eleven's trade name for one very specific thing: sweetened syrup, water and air frozen together in a barrel machine and pulled into a cup. USDA has exactly one record for that drink, FNDDS 2710576, "Slush frozen drink" (food code 92513000), and its household measures are cups — small, medium, large, extra large — which is the way people actually buy it. The other USDA rows that carry the word Slurpee are candy, lollipops and Pop-Tarts, not a drink, so they are not used here.

The table below uses the small cup, 360 g, because that is the smallest thing you can hand across the counter. FNDDS does not publish added sugars or trans fat for this record, so both rows are left out rather than guessed.

Cholesterol and potassium are both zero in this record, which is what you would expect from syrup, water and ice. Sodium is 36 mg in the small cup, 2% of the Daily Value, so a Slurpee is not a drink you need to count against a sodium target.

One large cup840 g235 kcal
One extra large cup1200 g336 kcal

The cup, the small, the medium, the large and the extra large are all USDA household measures on the record itself. The 1 oz line is our own arithmetic from the USDA 100 g figure, not a USDA serving, and it exists only because people scale drinks by the ounce.

There is a trap in that table worth pausing on. A measuring cup of slush is 240 g and 67 calories; the smallest cup on the counter is 360 g and 101 calories. Logging "1 cup" when you drank a small is a 34-calorie miss, and logging "1 cup" when you drank a large misses by 168. The unit that looks familiar is the one that is wrong.

One more caveat on sizes: 7-Eleven pours 12, 16, 22 and 32 fl oz cups, and those do not line up one to one with the small, medium, large and extra large in the USDA record. Everything on this page is stated in the USDA gram weights, so pick the gram figure closest to your cup rather than matching the name on the lid.

Slurpee sizes and what each cup costs you

Plastic cup of yellow slush with a paper straw and a glass of slush on a wooden table; 1 small (360 g) 101 cal, 1 medium (660 g) 185 cal

Flavor does not change the math here. Cherry, blue raspberry and Coke slush all come out of the same barrel formula, and USDA gives them one set of numbers. Size is the entire story.

SizeWeightCaloriesCarbohydrate% DV carbs
Small360 g101 kcal27.6 g10%
Medium660 g185 kcal50.7 g18%
Large840 g235 kcal64.5 g23%
Extra large1200 g336 kcal92.2 g34%

The gram weights are USDA household measures; the carbohydrate and sodium figures for the medium, large and extra large are our arithmetic, scaled from the 7.68 g of carbohydrate and 10 mg of sodium per 100 g in the record.

Step from the small to the extra large and the drink goes from 101 calories to 336 — a full lunch's worth of carbohydrate for something you finish in ten minutes because it is cold. Sodium climbs the same way, from 36 mg to 120 mg, still only 5% of the Daily Value at the biggest size.

Sugar-free slush and the ICEE pouch

USDA carries a second machine record, FNDDS 2710577, "Slush frozen drink, no sugar added", at 11 calories per 100 g. That turns a small cup into 40 calories and 11.2 g of carbohydrate instead of 101 calories and 27.6 g, our arithmetic from the USDA 11 calories per 100 g rather than a USDA serving of that record. It is not a zero-calorie drink, and the machines still hold a little sugar for texture, but it is roughly a 60% cut at the same volume.

VersionPer 100 gTypical servingCalories
Machine slush, regular28 kcalone small cup, 360 g101 kcal
Machine slush, no sugar added11 kcalone small cup, 360 g40 kcal
ICEE Slush pouch, Fruit Punch84 kcal8 fl oz (237 ml)199 kcal

That last row surprises people, so it is worth explaining rather than just listing. The branded ICEE rows in USDA are pouches of concentrate that have not been frozen or aerated yet, so per 100 g they land at 84 calories, three times the machine drink. Other pouches sit nearby: ICEE Freeze at 67 calories per 100 g, Big Easy Blends Blue Raspberry at 76, Slush Naturals Tropical Lemonade at 38. None of those is what comes out of the barrel at the store. The per-serving numbers for the pouches are calculated at a density of 1 g per ml, which is our assumption, not a USDA one.

The carbohydrate row is the only row that moves

Read the quick facts table top to bottom and five of the eight rows are effectively zero. Fat is 0.02 g per 100 g. Saturated fat, fiber, protein and cholesterol are flat zero. Sodium is a rounding error. Everything the drink does, nutritionally, it does through carbohydrate, and every gram of that carbohydrate is sugar.

The FDA Daily Values put total carbohydrate at 275 g a day, so a small cup is 10% of that and an extra large 34%. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans ask people to keep added sugars under 10% of daily calories. FNDDS does not break out added sugars for this record, so there is no added-sugars row in the table above and no percentage claim here — but syrup is the only ingredient in the cup that carries a calorie at all.

The practical version: if you are watching carbohydrate, the small cup is a snack-sized cost and the extra large is a meal-sized one. If you are watching fat, sodium or protein, this drink does not register on any of them.

How does a Slurpee compare?

DrinkPer 100 gUS servingCalories
Slush frozen drink28 kcalone small cup, 360 g101 kcal
Soft drink, cola42 kcalone small drink, 372 g156 kcal
Italian ice128 kcalone cup, 130 g166 kcal
Sports drink26 kcalone 20 fl oz bottle, 620 g161 kcal

Our take: per gram, slush is the second-lightest drink in this table — only the sports drink, at 26 calories per 100 g, is lighter, and Italian ice is more than four times denser because it is shaved ice with no soda water diluting it. Per cup, the small Slurpee is the cheapest of the four at 101 calories, and that is the honest reason to like it. The catch is that nobody buys the small. A medium at 185 calories is already past a small cola's 156, and the extra large at 336 is more than any single drink in this table. If you want the cold drink for 100 calories, the size on the lid is the whole decision.

Slurpee FAQs

How many calories are in a small Slurpee?

A small cup, 360 g in the USDA record, is 101 calories. The frozen drink runs 28 calories per 100 g, lighter per gram than cola at 42, because most of the cup is ice and water. All 27.6 g of carbohydrate in that small cup are sugars, and there is no fat and no protein.

How many calories are in a large Slurpee?

A large cup is 840 g and 235 calories, and the extra large at 1,200 g reaches 336. That is 64.5 g of carbohydrate in the large and 92.2 g in the extra large, 23% and 34% of the Daily Value. Same syrup, same ice: only the cup changed.

How much sugar is in a Slurpee?

A small cup holds 27.6 g of total sugars, a medium 50.7 g and a large 64.5 g, all of it the syrup that flavors the ice. USDA does not publish an added sugars figure for this record, so we do not put a percentage on it, but water and ice contribute none of it.

Is a Slurpee worse than a soda?

Per gram, no: 28 calories per 100 g against 42 for cola. Per cup it flips, because slush cups are big. A small 360 g slush is 101 calories while a small fountain cola of 372 g is 156, but a medium slush at 660 g is 185.

Does a sugar-free Slurpee have calories?

Yes, 40 calories in a 360 g small cup. The no-sugar-added slush is 11 calories per 100 g against 28 for the regular syrup version, a drop of about 60%, and 11.2 g of carbohydrate instead of 27.6 g. Sweetener replaces the syrup, but the drink is not zero.

How many carbs are in a Slurpee?

A small cup carries 27.6 g of carbohydrate, 10% of the Daily Value, and every gram of it is sugar: fiber is zero. A medium is 50.7 g, a large 64.5 g and an extra large 92.2 g. There is no fat, no protein and no cholesterol in any size.

Is there caffeine in a Slurpee?

USDA's 28-calorie slush record does not list caffeine, and FNDDS publishes no caffeine value for it. Cola-flavored slush is made from cola syrup, so those flavors do carry some; fruit flavors normally do not. Since the record is silent, we do not put a number on it.

What is the difference between a Slurpee and an ICEE?

Not the calories: USDA keeps one record for machine slush, 28 calories per 100 g, and it covers both brands. The difference shows in packaging. The branded ICEE pouch is 84 calories per 100 g, 199 in an 8 fl oz serving, because it is unfrozen concentrate rather than the aerated cup.
