How Many Calories in a Churro?
A regular churro is 189 calories — 45 grams of fried dough running 419 calories per 100 g. A mini churro is 63. The long fairground stick, around 2 oz, is 239. Dip that regular churro in two tablespoons of chocolate sauce and the plate reads 297.
You'd need to walk about 38 minutes to burn the 189 calories in one regular churro (45 g).

Churro quick facts
The reference here is the churro you actually hold: fried, ridged, rolled in cinnamon sugar, handed over at a cart, a fair or a food court. USDA files it as FNDDS record 2708070, "Churros", and gives the standard piece a weight of 45 g.
| Nutrient | Per 100 g | Per 1 churro (45 g) | % Daily Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calories | 419 | 189 | — |
| Total fat | 22.2 g | 10.0 g | 13% |
| Saturated fat | 9.2 g | 4.2 g | 21% |
| Carbohydrate | 48.9 g | 22.0 g | 8% |
| Dietary fiber | 2.6 g | 1.2 g | 4% |
| Total sugars | 23.4 g | 10.5 g | — |

Verified nutrition data
Numbers on this page come from USDA FoodData Central, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s food composition database, and from manufacturer labels where a branded product is named. Last verified September 2026. How we verify our data →
Two rows that appear on most packaged snacks are missing, and that is deliberate. USDA publishes no added-sugars value and no trans fat value for this record, so neither is listed rather than filled in from a similar food. Total sugars sit in the table without a percentage because the FDA sets no Daily Value for total sugars — only added sugars carry one.
Which makes the standout number easy to miss. It is not the sugar. One churro carries 4.2 g of saturated fat, 21% of the day's limit, from something the size of a pencil. The same churro is 8% DV for carbohydrate and 6% for sodium. The FDA's own reading rule is that 20% DV or more counts as high for a nutrient, and saturated fat is the one line on this food that clears the bar.
Nearly half the calories are frying oil
Do the arithmetic on those 419 calories per 100 g and the churro stops being a sugar food.
- Fat: 22.21 g × 9 = 200 calories, 48% of the total
- Carbohydrate: 48.87 g × 4 = 196 calories, 47%
- Protein: 6.05 g × 4 = 24 calories, 6%
Almost half of a churro's energy comes out of the fryer, not the sugar shaker. That is the physics of the thing: choux-style dough piped into hot oil has enormous surface area — all those ridges exist to be crisp — and every ridge is a place for oil to land.
The cinnamon sugar is real, at 10.5 g of total sugars in one piece, roughly two and a half teaspoons. But swapping to a churro with less coating changes the smaller half of the number. Nothing changes the frying.
This also settles a common question in one line: churros are fried, always. A baked version exists in home kitchens and it is a different food with different numbers, which is why USDA carries no entry for it.
Churro sizes, from mini to fairground
| Serving | Weight | Calories |
|---|---|---|
| 1 mini churro | 15 g | 63 |
| 1 oz | 28 g | 119 |
| 1 regular churro | 45 g | 189 |
| Large stand churro, about 2 oz | 57 g | 239 |
| 5 mini churros | 75 g | 314 |
| 3 churros | 135 g | 566 |
| 100 g | 100 g | 419 |
USDA lists exactly two measured sizes for churros: 1 regular at 45 g and 1 miniature at 15 g. The ounce rows above are arithmetic on the same 419 figure, and the 2 oz stand size is an estimate of the long fairground stick rather than a USDA measurement.
Size is the whole story with this food, and the minis are where people get caught. Five of them is a normal handful and a normal food-court cup. Five of them is also 75 g — 314 calories, more than one and a half regular churros. A small piece is not a small number when the pieces come by the fistful.
It runs the other way at a theme park or a state fair, where the churro is two to three times the USDA regular size and needs two hands. There is no verified label behind those, so no honest calorie figure exists for a specific park or warehouse-club churro. What can be said is the shape of it: log a fairground churro as two to three regular ones, not one.
What the chocolate sauce adds
| Version | Calories | Total sugars |
|---|---|---|
| 1 churro, plain (45 g) | 189 | 10.5 g |
| 1 churro + 2 tbsp chocolate sauce (40 g) | 297 | 34.5 g |
| 1 churro + 2 tbsp dulce de leche (38 g) | 309 | — |
| 3 churros + 2 tbsp chocolate sauce | 674 | — |
Two tablespoons of chocolate syrup is 108 calories, which is 57% on top of the churro itself. Dulce de leche is worse at 120, our own scaling of the USDA cup portion down to two tablespoons (38 g). Neither one gets counted by most people, because the dip arrives as a free extra rather than as a menu item with a price.
The sugar shift is the sharper part. A plain churro holds 10.5 g of total sugars; dipped, it holds 34.5 g, and the syrup contributes all of the difference. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans put added sugars at under 10% of daily calories, which is 50 g on a 2,000-calorie day. That 34.5 g is total sugars, which the limit does not measure — but the syrup's own 24 g are added sugars, roughly half a day's worth in one dip.
Sodium moves too, from 139 mg to 199 mg, though at 9% DV that stays a footnote next to the sugar.
If you want the dip, take the dip and drop a churro. One churro with sauce is 297 calories; two churros without is 378.
Frozen churros are not the same food
The bag in the freezer aisle reads much lower than 419, and shoppers reasonably assume the store version is lighter. It is not — the label is measuring a different moment.
US frozen churro labels land between 271 and 359 calories per 100 g. Hola! Churros comes in at 271, Goya at 280, Great Value churro loops at 359. In serving terms that means two frozen churros with their topping are around 130 to 140 calories, which sounds like a bargain next to 189 for one cart churro.
The catch is what "as packaged" means. Those numbers describe a par-fried stick with a thin sugar coating, before it goes back into oil or an air fryer and before anyone rolls it in more cinnamon sugar. USDA's 419 describes the finished, hot, fully coated churro someone hands you.
The clearest illustration is a Goya frozen churro record that reports 160 calories per 100 g with 0 g of fat. That is not a data error. It is raw dough, and every calorie the fryer is about to add is missing from it.
Two rules follow. Use the package figure only for what is in the package, and never average a label number against the USDA fried number — the average would describe nothing that exists.
Churro against donuts and funnel cake
| Item | Per 100 g | US serving | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Churro | 419 | 1 churro (45 g) | 189 |
| Beignet | 417 | 1 beignet (45 g) | 188 |
| Doughnut, yeast type | 421 | 1 doughnut (60 g) | 253 |
| Doughnut, cake type, plain | 434 | 1 doughnut (60 g) | 260 |
| Funnel cake with sugar | 353 | 1 cake, 6 inch (90 g) | 318 |
Per 100 g these are the same food wearing different hats. Churro 419, yeast donut 421, cake donut 434 — fried sweet dough is fried sweet dough, and apart from the funnel cake at 353, no one is winning that column by more than rounding error.
Per item the churro wins clearly, and only because of its shape. A stick has to be thin to cook through, so the standard piece weighs 45 g while a donut weighs 60 g. That 15 g gap is worth 64 to 71 calories, and it is the entire advantage. The churro also carries more fiber than a cake donut (2.6 g against 1.7 g per 100 g) and a good deal less sodium (309 mg against 477 mg).
Our take: at a counter selling both, one churro at 189 calories is the smaller commitment and the easier one to stop at. The funnel cake is the trap — lightest per 100 g at 353, heaviest on the plate at 318, because a 6-inch funnel cake weighs as much as two churros. And if the churro comes with a dipping cup, it is no longer the light option; at 297 it has passed the yeast donut.

Churro FAQs
How many calories in a churro?
189 calories for one regular churro of 45 g, at 419 calories per 100 g. That comes with 10.0 g of fat, 22.0 g of carbohydrate and 2.7 g of protein. A mini churro of 15 g is 63 calories, and a long fairground stick of about 2 oz is 239.
How many calories in a mini churro?
63 calories for one 15 g mini churro. The number that matters is the handful: five minis weigh 75 g and come to 314 calories, more than one and a half regular churros. Mini pieces get eaten in groups, so log the cup rather than the piece.
How many calories in a churro with chocolate sauce?
297 calories for one churro plus 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup, made of 189 for the churro and 108 for 40 g of syrup. The dip adds 57% on top. Dulce de leche is heavier still, taking the same churro to 309 calories.
Are churros fried or baked?
Fried, and 48% of the calories say so: fat supplies 200 of the 419 calories in 100 g, against 47% from carbohydrate. The ridges on a churro exist to crisp up in hot oil, and they hold that oil. USDA carries no entry for a baked churro.
How much sugar is in a churro?
10.5 g of total sugars in one 45 g churro, about two and a half teaspoons, from 23.4 g per 100 g. There is no % Daily Value next to it because the FDA sets one only for added sugars. Two tablespoons of chocolate sauce push the same churro to 34.5 g.
Is a churro healthier than a donut?
Per piece it is lighter: 189 calories against 253 for a yeast donut and 260 for a plain cake donut. Per 100 g they are level at 419 against 421 and 434. The churro's advantage is its shape, since a 45 g stick simply weighs less than a 60 g donut.
How many calories in frozen churros?
Roughly 130 to 140 calories for two frozen churros with topping, from labels running 271 to 359 calories per 100 g. Those figures are "as packaged", before the second fry and the extra cinnamon sugar, which is why they sit below the 419 per 100 g USDA gives a finished churro.
How much protein is in a churro?
2.7 g in one 45 g churro, which is 5% of the Daily Value, from 6.1 g per 100 g. That is a dessert protein figure, not a snack you would eat for staying power. The same churro carries 4.2 g of saturated fat, 21% of the day.
