How many calories are in a fortune cookie?
One fortune cookie weighs about 8 grams and carries 30 calories. Per 100 grams the cookie runs 378 calories, which sounds enormous until you realize 100 grams is roughly a dozen of them. Almost nobody eats a dozen. The check arrives, you crack one open, and that is 30 calories.
You'd need to walk about 6 minutes to burn the 30 calories in one cookie (8 g).

Fortune cookie quick facts
The numbers below come from the USDA record SR Legacy 172722, "Cookies, fortune". We picked it over the FNDDS entry for two reasons: a fortune cookie is a baked good rather than a prepared dish, and the SR Legacy record carries the household measure most people actually meet on a package, one ounce. The choice costs nothing in accuracy. The FNDDS entry 2707930 reports the identical profile, down to the last decimal, so switching records would not move a single figure on this page.
One thing to say up front about the picture: a real fortune cookie is thin and brittle, and a whole one weighs only 8 grams. That is why the per-cookie column looks so small next to the per-100-gram column.
| Nutrient | Per 100 g | Per 1 cookie (8 g) | % Daily Value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Calories | 378 | 30 | — |
| Total fat | 2.7 g | 0.2 g | 0% |
| Saturated fat | 0.67 g | 0.1 g | 0% |
| Carbohydrate | 84 g | 6.7 g | 2% |
| Dietary fiber | 1.6 g | 0.1 g | 0% |
| Total sugars | 45.42 g | 3.6 g | — |
| Protein | 4.2 g | 0.3 g | 1% |
| Sodium | 31 mg | 2 mg | 0% |
% Daily Value is based on a 2,000-calorie diet.

Two rows you will not find here: added sugars and trans fat. USDA does not publish either for this record, so total sugars cannot be scored against the 50 g Daily Value for added sugars, and we left both lines out rather than guess. Cholesterol is 2 mg per 100 g and potassium 41 mg, which round to 0 mg and 3 mg on a single cookie — both 0% of the Daily Value.
US servings, from one cookie to a restaurant handful
| Serving | Weight | Calories |
|---|---|---|
| 1 cookie | 8 g | 30 kcal |
| 2 cookies | 16 g | 60 kcal |
| 3 cookies | 24 g | 91 kcal |
| 5 cookies, restaurant handful | 40 g | 151 kcal |
| 1 oz | 28.35 g | 107 kcal |
| Per 100 g | 100 g | 378 kcal |
Two of those are USDA measures: the single cookie and the one-ounce serving. The two-, three- and five-cookie rows are our own arithmetic from the USDA 100 g figure, not USDA servings, scaled at 8 grams a cookie.
The five-cookie row is the one worth memorizing, because it is what actually happens. A bowl of cookies lands on the table for the whole party, hands go in more than once, and five of them is 151 calories — about the same as the fried appetizer nobody counted either. One cookie is a rounding error. Five is a snack.
That ounce row also explains the packaging. A bag label almost never says "one cookie." It usually says four or five, because a single 8-gram cookie is too small to make a sensible reference amount.
Chocolate, honey and citrus fortune cookies
| Version | Per 100 g | Label serving | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plain fortune cookie | 378 kcal | 1 cookie (8 g) | 30 kcal |
| Milk chocolate covered | 469 kcal | 2 cookies (32 g) | 150 kcal |
| Honey | 411 kcal | 5 cookies (28.5 g) | 117 kcal |
| Vanilla | 394 kcal | 5 cookies (33 g) | 130 kcal |
| Citrus | 394 kcal | 5 cookies (33 g) | 130 kcal |
| Japanese tea cookie, same recipe | 378 kcal | 1 oz (28.35 g) | 107 kcal |
| Homemade kit, baked | 444 kcal | 1/12 of package (27 g) | 120 kcal |
The chocolate-covered version is the only one that changes the math in a way you can feel. At 469 calories per 100 grams it is about a quarter denser than the plain cookie, and the coating makes each piece heavier too, so a labeled serving of two comes to 150 calories where two bare cookies are 60. Weight does more of that work than density.
Honey, vanilla and citrus cookies sit close to plain: 411, 394 and 394 calories per 100 grams. Note the honey label's serving of five weighs 28.5 grams against 33 grams for the vanilla and citrus, so its 117 calories is a smaller handful, not a lighter cookie.
The Japanese tea cookie is the same recipe under a different name in USDA's files — 378 calories per 100 grams, identical to the plain record. If you log one, log it as a fortune cookie.
Brand labels tell a consistent story. Across the six US branded fortune cookie products in USDA's database, a labeled serving of four or five cookies runs 130 to 140 calories, while the per-100-gram figures spread from 394 to 500 depending on glaze and added fat. That top figure is a single outlier product, not the typical plain cookie.
Sugar is the row to watch, not fat
Fortune cookies are nearly fat free and about half sugar. Per 100 grams: 2.7 g of fat against 45.42 g of total sugars — sugar outweighs fat by almost seventeen to one. Sugar is also 54% of the carbohydrate in the cookie, so the 84 grams of carbs are not the neutral starch you might assume.
On a single cookie none of it matters much: 0.2 g of fat and 0.1 g of saturated fat, both 0% against the FDA Daily Values, plus 3.6 g of total sugars, which USDA leaves unscored here. Sodium is the quietest row of all at 2 mg a cookie, which is why a fortune cookie is a reasonable dessert to end a salty restaurant meal with.
Fiber is where it falls short. At 1.6 g per 100 grams, a cookie contributes 0.1 g against a 28 g Daily Value — effectively nothing. If you want your grain calories to do some work, MyPlate's grains guidance points to whole grains, and a fortune cookie is not one of them. It is a small sweet, and it is honest about that.
How does a fortune cookie compare?
| Cookie | Per 100 g | US serving | Calories |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fortune cookie | 378 kcal | 1 oz (28.35 g) | 107 kcal |
| Biscotti | 373 kcal | 1 oz (28.35 g) | 106 kcal |
| Graham crackers, reduced fat | 386 kcal | 1 oz (28.35 g) | 109 kcal |
| Ladyfinger | 365 kcal | 1 oz (28.35 g) | 103 kcal |
Ounce for ounce, all four land within six calories of each other. Two of the three neighbors are lighter per 100 grams than the fortune cookie and one is heavier, and the gaps are too small to guide any real decision.
Our take: the reason to choose a fortune cookie over these is portion, not density. Biscotti carries about three times the fat of a fortune cookie and a ladyfinger about two and a half times the protein, but a fortune cookie stops you at 8 grams a piece whether you meant it to or not. For weight loss, the fortune cookie wins on built-in portion control. For staying full, none of them is the answer — pick the ladyfinger only if the extra protein matters to you, and eat something else entirely if you want satiety.

Fortune cookie FAQs
How many calories are in one fortune cookie?
One fortune cookie is 30 calories at a standard weight of 8 grams, based on USDA record 172722. Per 100 grams the figure is 378 calories, but 100 grams is about 12 cookies. Two cookies come to 60 calories and three to 91.
How many carbs are in a fortune cookie?
A single 8-gram fortune cookie has 6.7 grams of carbohydrate, which is 2% of the Daily Value. Per 100 grams the cookie is 84 grams of carbohydrate, one of the highest figures you will find in a baked good, simply because there is almost no fat or water diluting it.
How much sugar is in a fortune cookie?
One cookie carries 3.6 grams of total sugars, from 45.42 grams per 100 grams. That means sugar makes up about 54% of the carbohydrate in a fortune cookie. USDA does not publish added sugars for this record, so the figure cannot be scored against the 50 gram Daily Value for added sugars.
How many calories in 5 fortune cookies?
Five fortune cookies are 151 calories at 40 grams total, our own arithmetic from the USDA 100 gram figure. That is the realistic restaurant number, since the bowl gets passed around and few people stop at one. Branded packs label four or five cookies at 130 to 140 calories.
How many calories in a chocolate covered fortune cookie?
A labeled serving of two milk chocolate covered fortune cookies is 150 calories at 32 grams. Per 100 grams the coated cookie is 469 calories against 378 for a plain one. The coating adds density and weight at once, so two coated cookies cost more than twice two plain ones.
How many fortune cookies are in 100 grams?
About 12 cookies, since a standard fortune cookie weighs 8 grams. That is why the 378 calories per 100 grams headline is misleading on its own. Nobody eats 100 grams of fortune cookies in a sitting; a heavy night at the restaurant is five cookies, or 151 calories.
Are fortune cookies healthy?
They are a 30-calorie sweet with 3.6 grams of sugar and 0.1 grams of fiber per cookie, so they are neither good nor bad for you in any meaningful amount. Sodium is 2 mg, effectively zero. Treat them as a small dessert, not as a source of anything.
Are fortune cookies gluten free?
The standard cookie is not: its 84 grams of carbohydrate per 100 grams come from wheat flour, sugar and egg white. The USDA record does not carry an ingredient list, so if you avoid gluten, read the package rather than assume, and look for a product labeled gluten free.
